The FIA have confirmed that they still plan to go ahead with the 'off the throttle' blown diffuser design with effect from the British Grand Prix next month.
This is expected to cause issues for the teams who rely heavily on this, particularly the Renault, Red Bull and Mercedes teams, as the engines will need to be remapped.
It is reported that Mercedes have actually lost several engines whilst testing the new requirements, so this may mean that some teams begin to struggle more with reliability issues from Silverstone onwards.
Also confirmed is that with effect from 2012, blown diffusers will be banned outright. It was initially thought that alternative would be that the exhausts would be positioned just over the top of the diffuser at the back of the car, giving a minimal downforce gain. However, it has instead been confirmed that a 'periscope' style exhaust - as used in the sport in the 80's and 90's - will be mandated instead.
This will mean that the teams will need to find alternative ways of creating downforce, as the blown diffuser is credited by many as being the one single design feature which has made the Red Bulls the dominant team that they presently are.
Additionally, an advantage to the fans is that with the new 'periscope' exhausts, spectators should be able to see flames from the exhaust exits which were previously hidden.

Rosberg "Honoured" By Award
Mercedes driver Nico Rosberg has been awarded the Bandini trophy, which recognises a driver's performance both on and off the track.
The trophy is awarded annually, and is named after the Italian driver Lorenzo Bandini who was killed at the 1967 Monaco Grand Prix.
Rosberg, who travelled to Italy to receive the award, said "The history of this trophy is very big, and it's a very well known price not only in Italy but internationally. That's great and I'm very honoured."

Virgin Part Company With Wirth
Virgin have announced that Technical Director Nick Wirth has left the team following a poor start to the season.
Virgin had been aiming to reach Q2 on multiple occasions this season, but their best start to a Grand Prix in the six races so far this season has been on the tenth row of the grid.
It has recently been rumoured that McLaren may become a technical partner of the team, similarly to the arangement between McLaren and Force India, which saw the team move from being perpetual tail-enders to regular point scorers in just a few seasons. This may also mean that Virgin look to use Mercedes engines in future seasons.
Virgin may now look to introduce a wind tunnel to it's design department. To date, the team have done all their design using CFD (Computation Fluid Dynamics) technology, which is much more cost effective, but still not considered as effective as wind tunnels.

Spanish Grand Prix - 22 May 2011
The Spanish Grand Prix took place earlier today, the Barcelona track being one of the most notriously difficult to overtake on. In fact, for every F1 race here in the last decade, the pole sitter has gone on to win the race.
This was the first race of the season which reigining World Champion Sebastian Vettel was not starting from pole.
Another recurrence of Red Bull's KERS gremlins meant that he was marginally slower than his team mate Mark Webber in yesterday's qualifying session.
However, the neither Red Bull's would have been expecting what happened as the lights turned green. Home hero Fernando Alonso darted, from fourth place, past first Lewis Hamilton, then Mark Webber (who had slipped behind the faster starting Vettel), and then managed to find the inside line into the first corner, passing the race leader.
Jenson Button had a polar opposite start from the Spaniard, spinning his wheels from the line, and dropped behind both Mercedes' cars, Felipe Massa and Sebastien Buemi.
At the first round of pit-stops, Ferrari, in a move reminiscent of the Championship losing events of the Abu Dhabi Grand Prix, tried to match Alonso's pit strategy to the strategies of the Red Bull cars.
This appeared to work, as Vettel was released into the back of a pack of midfield cars. However, in one and a half race defining laps, Vettel - admittedly on fresher tyres - managed to fight his way past Button, Massa and Nico Rosberg, moving the young German back to the leading pack.
Once again, the more pit stops seemed to be the better, with most drivers pitting at least three times, making it difficult to follow the action on the track.
A good inter-team battle was raging between the Mercedes cars, with Michael Schumacher refusing to yield to Rosberg, who was lapping slightly quicker than the former Champion.
Nick Heidfeld had started the Grand Prix in last place, the German had been unable to qualify as his car had caught fire in dramatic fashion in the last practice session on Saturday morning. However, just as Webber had shown a couple of races ago, the Lotus-Renault driver was able to make good use of his larger choice of tyres and move gradually up through the field.
Moving into the final stage, Sebastian Vettel lead the pack, but had Lewis Hamilton hot on his heels. Third place Jenson Button was almost 20 seconds further back, but he in turn was fairly comfortably ahead of the rest.
Vettel's KERS system appeared to work only occasionally during the race, as apparent overheating issues meant it was unusable for several laps at a time.
Hamilton, making good use of KERS and his DRS, was able to catch Vettel at the end of the long start/finish straight, but Vettel defended smartly and Hamilton was unable to pass. This routine continued for several laps, but Vettel drove well and took the checkered flag for the fourth time in five races this season.

Chinese Grand Prix - 17 April 2011
Another early start this morning, with the third round of the 2011 Formula One World Championship.
The drama started before the warm-up lap even began, as Lewis Hamilton's McLaren failed to start in the garage. The mechanics frantically set to work removing the engine cover and air box, as it appeared the engine had been flooded. It was a race against time to get the car running, and Hamilton eventually took to the track, less than a minute before the deadline. Any later, and he would have had to start the race from the pitlane.
As the lights went green, pole-setter Sebastian Vettel got an uncharacteristically slow start, being passed by the McLaren's of Jenson Button and then Hamilton, and almost lost another position to Nico Rosberg's Mercedes.
Vettel managed to overtake Button in the first round of pitstops. As Button led the German into the pitlane, he mistakenly drove into Vettel's pit box which was situated directly before his own. The confusion didn't lose the Briton much time, but it was just enough for Vettel to get the jump on him.
Vettel's team mate Mark Webber, who had started in 18th after a poor qualifying session, started the race on the prime (hard compound) tyres. He didn't make as much ground as expected due to a lack of KERS once again, and at one point dropped as low as 20th. However, as he hadn't used any option (soft compound) tyres, he had three brand new sets in his garage. Eventually, once he had pitted and switched to the options, he started to feel more comfortable with the car and began to move up the order.
There was only one retirement in this race; the youngest driver on the grid, Jaime Alguersuari, had recorded his personal best qualifying result - 7th - but didn't get a great start and lost a few positions. Leaving the pits with a fresh set of tyres, it soon became clear his right-rear tyre was not properly attached, and it came off completely shortly afterwards. The Spaniard was unable to return to the pits and had to retire.
As the race entered the final stages, the drivers with fresher tyres began to gain a significant advantage. Vettel, who had regained the lead thanks to a two-stop strategy, began to lose time to those chasing him. Button, in fourth place, was at one point catching the leader by as much as three seconds a lap. Hamilton drove supremely well in the second half of the race, passing his team mate, Nico Rosberg and then, eventually, the leader Vettel.
Webber was continuing to move well up through the field, and managed to catch Button who was holding the final podium position. Using the DRS to the best of his advantage, Webber was able to catch and pass Button, meaning he had gained a highly impressive 15 places since the start!
This result shows that the pairing of Sebastian Vettel and Red Bull are not unbeatable, which is good news for the rival drivers and teams, and should make for a more exciting season.

Q1 Casualties
Since the three new teams, Team Lotus; Hispania and Virgin entered the Formula One World Championship in 2010, it is generally accepted that the six drivers from these teams will generally fail to progress beyond the first round of qualifying. Seven cars are eliminated from qualifying at the end of Q1, leaving just one more driver to fall at the first hurdle.
This is usually simply the slowest driver, although sometimes an accident, or - in the case of Mark Webber at the Chinese Grand Prix - a tactical error, can cause a traditional front runner to drop out.
We have compiled a list of which drivers outside of the new teams have been knocked out in Q1 in 2010, and so far in 2011, with how many times they have failed to progress:

2011 Predictions - Round 3, China

For the first time, the F1RP has predicted that reigning World Champion Vettel will win the race. If this does happen, Vettel will acheive five consecutive Grand Prix wins, a feat which has only been acheived seven times previously.
McLaren fans will be pleased with the predicted podium places for both of the team's drivers, however it is suggested that Mercedes will have another difficult weekend.

For the first time, the F1RP has predicted that reigning World Champion Vettel will win the race. If this does happen, Vettel will acheive five consecutive Grand Prix wins, a feat which has only been acheived seven times previously.
McLaren fans will be pleased with the predicted podium places for both of the team's drivers, however it is suggested that Mercedes will have another difficult weekend.

2011 Preview: The Best Of The Rest
The penultimate part of our 2011 preview focuses on the the top three 'midfield' teams.
All of these teams are previous World Champions, albeit possibly under a different name. The teams will be aiming for podiums, and attempting to challenge the top three whenever possible, whilst trying to keep the teams behind them at bay.

The first team to look at today is AT&T Williams. Finishing sixth in 2010 surely felt like - and was - a great result for the team, who fought a season long battle with Force India, eventually just pipping them to the post.
However, looking back at the teams illustrious history, which consists of nine World Championships and 113 race wins, sixth place might seem like an underacheivement.
What needs to be taken into consideration is that William are the only independent team left on the grid, and it is no secret that they do not have the financial clout to match some of their rivals.
Williams did manage to acheive a pole position last year, through Nico Hulkenberg's memorable lap in Brazil, but the young German was dropped for this season, in favour of a driver with more financial backing.
The number one driver for this season is once again veteran Brazilian, Rubens Barrichello. The most experienced driver on the field with over 300 Grand Prix to his name, Barrichello will provide the team with a wealth of technical information and constructive feedback on performance to help the team develop the car further.
After spending several seasons playing second fiddle to more successful team mates including Michael Schumacher and, more recently, Jenson Button, Barrichello will appreciate leading a team and will want to prove he still has what it takes to compete at the front of the field.
The teams second driver, the man with the Nico Hulkenberg-sized shoes to fill, is Pastor Maldonado. The young Venezuelan has looked quick so far in testing, but has made a few costly errors, with team boss Frank Williams saying that he is perhaps a little "too comfortable" with the car. Hopefully, Maldonado will have found the limit of his car and his own ability by the time the season begins.

Next, we have Lotus Renault GP. Classified fifth last season, the Renault-powered team have two World Championships to their name, thanks to current Ferrari number one, Fernando Alonso.
However, the management team have been forced to make major changes in recent years following the departure of Flavio Briatore and Pat Symonds in the wake of the race-fixing allegations levied at them by former driver Nelson Piquet Jr.
Most of the off-season news has revolved around the team, as number one driver and World Championship hopeful Robert Kubica was involved in a serious rally accident. Although the Pole thankfully seems to be making good progress in his recovery, there were plenty of rumours regarding his replacement.
It was eventually Nick Heidfeld who was selected as Kubica's replacement. The experienced German was out of contract for 2011, despite recording good results for Sauber at the end of 2010 after replacing Pedro de la Rosa.
Although Heidfeld has never won a race (despite acheiving several podiums), he is widely recognised as being a very consistent driver, setting the record for finishing the most consecutive Grands Prix (33).
Heidfeld will certainly have a point to prove this season in order to ensure he is offered a drive next year, and the car looks good enough to help him acheive that!
The team's second driver is once again Vitaly Petrov. The young Russian's financial backing was certainly a key factor in helping him to obtain a drive last year.
He struggled to adapt to the car at the beginning of the season, and crashed more times than his team would have liked. However, Petrov noticeably improved as the season progressed, scoring points on several occassions.
Alonso fans will probably best remember him for his faultless performance in Abu Dhabi, the final race of the season, where he calmly kept World Championship contenders Fernando Alonso and Mark Webber behind him for over half the race, which handed the World Championship title to Webber's team mate Sebastian Vettel.

Finally, Mercedes GP Petronas F1 Team. Finishing fourth in their debut season after acquiring the World Championship winning Brawn GP, this Mercedes-Benz-engined team are probably the most likely team, if any, to break into the top three.
Mercedes most valuable asset is arguably the genius of Team Principal Ross Brawn, and his strong relationship with star driver Schumacher.
The team's number one driver needs no introduction. Seven-time World Champion Michael Schumacher's return to Formula One was surely the biggest talking point at the start of the 2010 season.
At first the veteran German seemed to struggle with the car and tyres, which had changed considerably in the relatively short time he had been away from the sport.
Never far from controversy, Schumacher received a great deal of criticism after squeezing his former team mate Rubens Barrichello towards the pit wall during the Hungarian Grand Prix.
Schumacher has already stated that he does not expect to be challenging for the World Championship this season, but he believes they may be able to fight for race wins.
In an unchanged line-up from last year, Nico Rosberg maintains the team's second seat. The German driver performed very consistently last year, and was never far behind the leading pack. He also quite comfortably outscored his World famous team mate last season, and will want to acheive the same again in 2011.
With significant updates having been introduced by the team during pre-season testing, it is fairly safe to say that they will continue to develop further updates as the season unfolds.

2011 Predictions - Round 01, Australia

Brawn: New Exhausts "Significant"
Mercedes GP boss Ross Brawn has explained that he believes that the new exhaust systems, trialled by several teams this season, will be very effective.
Brawn also claims that the exhaust could be "more significant" than the double diffusers, widely credited for helping the Brawn team win their World Championship winning 2009 season.
The front-blown exhaust design was first unveiled by Lotus-Renault, but several other teams have also followed suit, as the design is shown to improve downforce, and therefore handling.
Brawn believes that in the future, stricter rules may well be introduced to unify the designs of the exhaust systems, but for the time being he does not think they will pose any regulatory problems.

Testing, Barcleona - 12 March 2011
Just five drivers headed out onto a very wet Barcelona track today, for the final day of pre-season testing.
Times were well off the pace today, due in part to the almost monsoon conditions, and only three drivers actually set times, with Michael Schumacher and Fernando Alonso venturing out only for a handful of installation laps.
The fastest time of the day was set again by Mercedes' Nico Rosberg, who despite completing the most laps of anybody, still only recorded thirty or so laps, just over half a race distance.
Second quickest was Pastor Maldonado for Williams, with his best time about half a second slower than Rosbergs.
McLaren's Lewis Hamilton was third today, although he seemed happy and was upbeat about his team's chances when speaking to the press, saying "I'm positive. I love racing, I'm looking forward to racing".

Brawn Profits
Mercedes GP boss Ross Brawn has made a sizeable return on his investment in the sale of the team to Mercedes-Benz owners Daimler.
Brawn, along with four others, purchased the struggling Honda team in a management buy-out for a symbolic £1 at the end of 2008, following a fairly unsuccessful campaign.
The team's fortunes were turned around the following season, winning both the Constructors crown and Drivers Championship for Jenson Button.
Englishman Brawn has now agreed to sell his shares in the team for a figure believed to be in the region of £100m.

Ecclestone's Frank Interview
Mr Formula One, Bernie Ecclestone, has given a very typically straight-talking interview with Formula1.com.
Ecclestone discusses the cancellation of the Bahrain Grand Prix "I think it was the right decision", Michael Schumacher's chances "If Mercedes give him a competitive car, he will win again", Robert Kubica "For me Robert Kubica is one of the top drivers" and the safety of modern Formula One cars "if you could choose your kind of accident I am sure they would all choose a Formula One car".
The Englishman also admitted to favouritism when asked who he would pick between the two current Red Bull drivers "Very clearly Sebastian (Vettel)!", and said that if he could manage a team again, he would pick Ferrari "because of the myth", with Vettel and Fernando Alonso as drivers. The third driver would be "Probably the one with the most money, or Nico Hulkenberg".
Controversially, the often outspoken boss said that he would like to "make it rain", by artificially wetting the tracks during the race with little warning, in an effort to make the show more of a spectacle. This has, however, already received some opposition, particularly from Mark Webber - although the Australian may have been offended by Ecclestone's earlier remarks regarding his preference for Vettel!

The Effect Of Tyre Wear
Several drivers and teams have expressed concerns with the effects of the wear-rate of the new Pirelli tyres, with Team Lotus driver Jarno Trulli stating "I think something is still missing in the development, because the tyres aren't balanced yet". (For this story in full, see www.autosport.com)
It is claimed that the tyres degrade much quicker than last year's Bridgestone tyres - and F1 correspondent James Allen can prove this! His website now shows graphs showing lap times from 2010 tests, and compares the times to the 2011 tests.

Testing Day 3 & Bahrain Update
With a possible sign that Mercedes troubles are not as bad as originally thought, Nico Rosberg set the fastest time in today's Barcelona test.
Vitaly Petrov was second fastest for Lotus-Renault, with Lewis Hamilton putting a McLaren in the top three for the first time in a while.
Also, Autosport are reporting that the decision as to whether the Bahrain Grand Prix will go ahead will be made tomorrow, so many people interested in both Formula One and International politics will be waiting on this decision with great interest.

Testing Day 2 & News
Day two of Barcelona testing saw a similar result to the previous test, with Vettel once again the fastest.
Alguersuari was second fastest, with Alonso third, however they were within a second of the reigning World Champion, unlike Friday's times.
In other news, Michael Schumacher has said that he believes his Mercedes team can win a race, but he doubts they have enough for the Championship.
Legendary Formula One star Nikki Lauda has voiced his concerns regarding the Bahrain Grand Prix, saying that democracy should come before sport.

Heidfeld Stakes Claim To Lotus-Renault Seat

More New Cars!
Today saw the wraps come off three new cars.
Mercedes GP with their heavily amended machine.
